Base Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4054_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, settling the debt from a year ago, at the end of this freshly concluded December we once again set out for Marmolejo. But not by the standard route \u2014 this time via its neighboring volcano San Jos\u00e9, just to avoid repeating ourselves. The two stand neatly in a row along the Chile\u2013Argentina border.<\/p>\n<p>We landed in Santiago on the morning of December 29, picked up the car, stocked up on gas and sausages at the store, and rolled up to the already familiar goat farm at 2400 meters around three in the afternoon. Paid the farmer the required tribute (20,000 pesos) for using his land as a parking lot, put our boots on, and got under the packs. \u201cAnd now, with all this crap on board, we shall attempt to take off.\u201d (c)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4028_SL.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"688\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I, of course, immediately gravitated toward the flowers. How can one possibly walk past something like this! Caiophora coronata.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4023_flower.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"615\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Amazingly, I managed not to touch them. Turns out the plant is basically an Andean version of nettle, so it was very fortunate that I refrained.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4025_flower.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"802\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rhodophiala rhodolirion, a local amaryllis relative. It pokes up so delicately straight out of the dry ground, as if someone just stuck it there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4029_flower.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"756\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re heading up, while the familiar goats are descending for their evening milking.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4032_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We climbed into the La Engorda valley. And there are the practically familiar stone ruins at 2600. We spent the night by them last year, and will again this time \u2014 just slightly from a different side.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4037_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But if last year we went left, into the Marmolejo valley, this time we\u2019re heading toward San Jos\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4038_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The water in the river near our sleeping rock was liquid clay; for clean water we had to walk almost back to the entrance of the valley, at least a kilometer one way. Good warm-up, though. Last year it was murky too, but we managed to find a side channel with settled water. This year there\u2019s more snow, stronger melt, the rivers are higher and dirtier.<\/p>\n<p>Evening.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4040_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"639\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Morning began with birds.<\/p>\n<p>Grey-hooded sierra finch. Serious fellow.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4036_bird.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"701\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rufous-collared Sparrow aka Zonotrichia capensis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4045_bird.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"687\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Larrea nitida. Knee-high carpet thickets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4051_plant.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tropaeolum polyphyllum, family Tropaeolaceae \u2014 who would have thought.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4053_plant.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the proper way to celebrate a birthday? Correct \u2014 throw 26\u201328 kilos on your back and trudge uphill under a scorching sun.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4052_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At first we walk along the valley for a bit, successfully cross the river without getting our feet wet (in the morning the water is much lower), then turn off and start climbing straight up onto the ridge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4050_SL.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s the little stream valley where the Refugio Plantat stands. The greenest place on our route \u2014 practically an oasis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4056_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s the refuge. Elevation 3100. The roof turned out to be such a bright orange that from above we could spot it without fail.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4058_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4060_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Right by the doorstep the stream spreads into a small pond, around which there\u2019s a green lawn with fat dandelions and plenty of birds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4059_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4062_SL.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4064_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>People who leave the parking lot in the morning instead of late afternoon like we did usually spend the night here. Many just hike up to the refuge as the final goal of a day walk.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/canadaru.net\/bufo_storage\/Blog_photo\/2026\/Travel\/Chilie\/San%20Jose\/DSC_4063_jose.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We met here an Australian and two Germans, whom we would keep running into on the mountain afterward. And also a longtime local, comrade Nelson, who enthusiastically told us all about the mountain and even handed over a homemade route map. The map turned out to be inaccurate, but beautiful. This will be our base camp.
