They inhabit sandy beaches of the south of North America from New York to Los Angeles.
When they don’t catch fish, they rest on the beach.
The relative of Royal tern is Sandwich tern aka Thalasseus sandvicensis.
They are very similar despite the size and bill colour.
I met them on the beach of western Florida.
