Waters and Wines of North Burgundy. Way to Auxerre
We are coming to Auxerre, the capital of the Yonna department, along which we are boating.
Immediately appeared the key structure of the town – the famous Saint-Germain Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery (and as we know – Benedictines are always tightly connected with good wine).
The Abbey is old, its first oratory was built in the 5th century, but the town is much older, it was already a huge centre in the Roman Empire time.
To enter the town, we need to pass a big lock.
And move along the whole town to the mooring place.
And again, we were not lucky with mooring. Auxerre has plenty of common mooring places on both sides of the river. Many of them have water and electricity. And all of them were busy. Completely. We found only one space between two barges, which can with difficulties fit ours. No water, no electricity, just some bushes.
We didn’t have options, so we moored the boat, and went to see Auxerre.
Yes, it is also the street.
Not only history and architecture were our goals. We planned to visit one cheese shop. Cheese from all parts of France is sold here.
Hovereve ore interest is local cheese.
These we bought for degustation. (The orange one is not local, but I like it a lot).
Walk along the river under the sun.
In the evening we had a cultural-gastronomic visit to the restaurant Le Bourgogne, which specialized in Burgundy gastronomy. Gugeres, escargot, meet, cheese… Everything in Burgundy is so delicious. The meal was washed down with Burgundian wine. Kir, Chablis, Irancy. But about wine, I will talk separately. The visit was very representative.
The morning met us with deep fog.
In this, we run in the bakery for fresh gougers and croissants.
Pushed our boat from the bushes.
And moved slowly forward to new experiences.
To be continued…
